arrival in UT

copper pit nested into surroundings

We weren't able to visit the Bingham Copper Pit yesterday. The site was closed due to high winds. We navigated our way there through a sprawling and extremely tidy suburban landscape extending outside Salt Lake City.

We arrived at the Salt Lake to experience an intensification of the storm, which we were told by a park ranger to be a convergence of two storms creating hurricane force winds.

before the high winds arrived, Liz takes some photos. The Great Salt Lake State park with a copper smelter in the background.

the lake was very low yesterday, seems to be becoming playa

still other wordly, a trace of the ancient Lake Bonneville that used to span 20,000 square miles. The current Great Salt Lake spans only 1,700 miles
